How to Declutter Your Home and Mind This Spring (For Busy Moms)

There is something about spring that gently invites us to begin again. To have a fresh start, and to declutter your home and mind to invite renewal in your spaces and your heart.

Not in a rushed, overwhelming way, but in a quiet, steady unfolding.

In Scripture, we see spring reflected as a season of life and renewal. A reminder that God is always at work, even when everything feels still. Beneath the surface, growth is happening. Change is coming.

The past few days, I’ve been slowly refreshing our home. Not all at once. Not perfectly.

Just clearing small spaces. Opening windows. Letting in light.

Bringing a sense of newness and life back into our home.

It’s our first spring in Alaska, and watching the snow begin to melt, seeing patches of grass peek through, and noticing the days stretch longer has stirred something in me. After such a long, dark winter, the shift feels almost sacred.

It has reminded me that God designed renewal into the rhythm of creation.

And not just in nature, but in us.

If you prefer to watch instead of read, here is the video version of this post.

When Life Feels Like a Long Winter

There are seasons in life that feel like winter.

Heavy. Quiet. Exhausting.

The kind of seasons where you are just trying to get through the day. Where your nervous system feels stretched thin, your patience runs short, and your mind feels cluttered with everything you need to do, remember, and carry.

For many moms, this isn’t just a “season.” It can feel like a constant state of survival.

And when you’re in that place, even the idea of “starting fresh” can feel like one more thing you’re failing to do.

But spring doesn’t rush.

It doesn’t demand perfection.

It simply begins.

Slowly, steadily, the light returns. The snow melts. The ground softens. New life pushes through.

Not all at once. Not perfectly.

Just faithfully.

The Clutter We Carry

As I’ve been moving through our home, I’ve noticed something.

Clutter doesn’t just exist in our spaces. It quietly builds in our minds and hearts too.

We hold onto things in our homes the same way we hold onto thoughts.

Things we don’t use.
Often times things we don’t love.
Things we don’t even notice anymore.

We keep them “just in case.” We move them from one place to another, unsure of where they belong, but not quite ready to let them go.

And mentally, we do the same.

We hold onto old patterns of thinking.
Negative inner dialogue.
Lingering worries.
Unmet expectations.

Thoughts that may have once served a purpose but no longer bring life.

Over time, it becomes heavy.

Not always in a loud, obvious way, but in a quiet, constant weight that keeps us feeling overwhelmed, reactive, and drained.

Decluttering Your Home and Mind to Make Room for What Matters

Spring cleaning, in its truest sense, isn’t about having a perfectly organized home.

It’s about making room.

Making room to breathe.
Creating room to think clearly.
Allowing room to be present.

And spiritually, it’s about making room for God to move.

We were never meant to carry everything we pick up along the way.

We are allowed to release what no longer serves us.

To lay down the thoughts that keep us stuck.
We are able to surrender the worries we were never meant to hold.
To let go of the pressure to do everything perfectly.

In Romans 12:2, we are reminded to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

That renewal doesn’t come from striving harder.

It comes from surrender.

From intentionally choosing what we allow to stay and what we release.

A Gentle Approach to Spring Cleaning

If you are in a full, busy season, the idea of resetting your home and your mind can feel overwhelming.

So instead of trying to do everything, consider this a gentle invitation.

Start small.

Choose one space.

A kitchen counter.
A nightstand.
A basket that has quietly collected everything.

Clear it slowly.

As you do, pay attention to what comes up in your mind. The thoughts, the tension, the urge to rush.

Let this be more than just cleaning.

Let it be a practice of awareness.

Then, take a moment to do the same internally.

Ask yourself:

What thoughts have I been holding onto that no longer bring life?
What am I carrying that I can give to God today?

You don’t need hours of quiet time.

Just a few intentional minutes.

A whispered prayer while you wash dishes.
A deep breath before responding to your children.
A moment of stillness before the day begins.

This is how renewal starts.

Even something as simple as an evening reset before bed can bring so much renewal.

A New Rhythm, Not a Perfect Reset

One of the biggest misconceptions about change is that it has to be dramatic.

That we need a full reset, a perfect system, a complete transformation overnight.

But lasting change rarely happens that way.

It happens in rhythms.

Small, consistent shifts that create space for something new.

That’s what this season has been for me.

Not a complete overhaul of our home or my habits.

Just a gentle refreshing.

A returning to what matters.

A quiet making room.

An Invitation for This Season

This spring, I want to invite you into something simple.

Not a checklist.
Not a pressure-filled reset.

Just a gentle clearing of your home.
Refreshing of your thoughts.
Letting go of the weight you’ve been carrying.

Let go of what no longer belongs.

Make room for peace.
For clarity.
For God’s presence in your everyday moments.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly.

Just a faithful beginning.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, I created something simple for you.

A 10-minute reset to help you take the first step out of survival mode.

A quiet, gentle way to invite God into your day, even in the middle of motherhood and all that it holds.

A small step toward renewing your mind and creating space for peace.

You can start there.
